Wolf Bust

Media: Clay

My piece is a clay bust of a wolf. The piece only shows the wolfs head and the wolf appears to be howling. The bust has lots of details on his lower jaw to show him having fur. This was added intentionally in order to add realism to the piece.

The bust was made with a large slab of clay. I used my hands to form the wolfs head. To make the flowing pieces of fur I used a wooden spoon and plastic cutting tools. I tried to add the fur while the piece was still moist so that it would be easy and malleable.

I decided to make a wolves head because of how fun it was to create a bears head last semester. My piece really doesn't have a meaning, I just wanted to create something complex.

My goal for this piece was to make something complex and unique. I didn't want to make something similar to what someone else was doing, which is why I did a bust. I also wanted to make it as realistic as I could.

I learned different things while making this piece regarding clay and art making. I found how anything and everything can be used while making clay and also that it is very easy to make small details with clay. This project also helped me learn how to not just simply ignore my art making problems, and instead find creative solutions to said problems. I am satisfied with how my project came out now. I just wish I could've finished more of it

Bua Inspired piece

Media: Prismacolor pencils

My piece is a foreshortened caricature drawing of guitarist Carlos Santana. The character is playing guitar. His appearance is greatly exaggerated, as his head was made bigger and more comical. The character is also foreshortened as his hands and guitar seem to be closer to the viewer. I used the element of color to create emphasis on the character.

The piece was created by using prismacolor pencils. I made the piece by first mapping it out on a separate sheet of paper. I decided to put him in the center to create emphasis and also to make the foreshortening more visible to the viewer. I mapped out his outline of my final sheet of paper and proceeded to color in his guitar with bright colors. I moved on to what the character was wearing and continued using bright colors. I added in his skin tone and added details to the hair.

For this piece I tried to create apiece emulating Justin Buas style. I still wanted to emulate his style while incorporating elements from the style I like to do. I did this by creating a caricature of a rock star. I also wanted to convey a mood through the characters facial expression. I wanted it to convey excitement and actual love and commitment to guitar playing.

I wanted to successfully emulate Buas style through this piece while incorporating my style. I feel that I have successfully accomplished this goal.

This piece has helped me learn how to emulate an artists style whilst adding my own style. For the next project I actually plan to step out of my comfort zone and try new techniques. I am overall satisfied with how my piece came out. I was able to draw it without too many problems and also I managed to finish it

Art Show Piece

Media-Pencil

My piece is a portrait of two members of a rock and roll band performing. One character is on his knees with a microphone in his hands and the other character is playing a guitar. I decided to draw the characters like this in order to express rock and rolls raw and wild energy.

In order to create this piece I first created four sketches of the idea I wanted to do. I decided to add the second character after realizing that there was too much negative space. I didn't want to leave it like that. After mapping out what I wanted I transferred it to a larger piece of paper.

The reason I did this piece was to express rock culture and also to challenge myself a bit. I  wanted to make a piece which conveyed wild energy and I felt that by doing this portrait, I did just that. I also took in account the way the subject matter was composed. I didn't just want to put one character in the center, which is why I added one more to it.

My center goal for this piece was to be able to create an intricate portrait that seemed pretty complex. I also wanted to make another piece related to rock culture, as this is a topic which Im fond of. I feel that this piece helped me to somewhat achieve these goals. I do like the way my piece looks like right now but I wish to improve it.

Overall Im satisfied with how my piece is turning out but I do wish to improve it. Along the process I learned to persist and not let problems affect the way my work turns out. I feel that my piece came out the way I wanted it to but I also think that theirs room for improvement.

Guitar Hands

Media-Prismacolor Pencils

The piece depicts a pair of hands playing a guitar. The neck of the guitar is only visible and part of a mans chest is visible as well, but is behind the guitar.  The element of line is greatly used and this helps add to the realism.

This piece was created using prismacolor pencils on a tan colored paper. The process of making this piece started with me first mapping out what I wanted to do. I then proceeded to add the small little details that add to the realism of the piece. After this I shaded the light spots with a white prismacolor pencil using heavy pressure. I want to finish this by adding darker colors and burnishing in certain spots to add realism to it.

The reason I made this piece was more because of how I wanted to improve my technical skill with prismacolor pencils. I wanted to make something realistic through this media as I like using it but I haven't really made anything realistic with it. All the pieces I've done with prismacolor pencils always look kind of cartoonish and I wanted to improve this.

My goals for this piece was to completely finish a piece and have it turn out good. I dont think I fulfilled these goals but I do hope I can fulfill them on the next project.

I overall did enjoy this project and learned a few new things. I am disappointed though that I didn't finish it but I hope to do good on the next project .

Plaster PArrot

Media-Plaster

My piece is a sculpture of a parrot. The parrot has visible tail feathers and wings which are resting by its side. The parrot also has feathers perched on top of its head. The whole sculpture is made from newspaper and cardboard which gives it a unique style.

To make this sculpture I first got a bottle so that it would be used as its body. Afterwards I started to layer lots of newspaper on said bottle. I did this so that the bottle wouldn't remain symmetrical and so that it would have humps on some parts in order to mimic a parrots body. After I was done making the parrots body, I proceeded to make the wings. I cut fin shaped pieces out of cardboard which I layered with newspaper. I attached the the wings to the body and moved on to attaching the head. The head was made of a cardboard tube which had a  newspaper ball on top.

I chose to do a parrot for this project because I had never done a bird. I normally try to do simple things when I can but this time I decided to do something I really never had done. Another reason I did a parrot was because I wanted to do a piece which my mother would like. She has always liked birds and parrots and I thought it would be nice to make something for her.

This project helped me learn a few different things and it also introduced me to the idea of making something from anything. I hope to better my skills with plaster in the future.

I am overall satisfied with how my project looks like up to now. I will try to finish it and improve on it.

Puffin Bird

Media-Acrylic Paint

My piece is of a puffin bird overlooking a cliff and staring at the sea. The puffin bird is visible while the mentioned sea and cliff aren't visible. The painting is in the style of realism and the puffin bird successfully shows this.

I started this piece by first drawing four sketches of how I wanted it to look. I then chose my favorite one and mapped it out on a canvas board. I started and finished painting the puffin bird and have yet to finish painting the rest of the landscape.

I tried to express the calmness of nature but since I didn't finish this isn't as present. I also tried to better my skills with acrylic paint, as this is a media I'm not comfortable with.

One major goal I had with this project was to improve my skills with acrylic paint. I haven't really been comfortable with using acrylic paint and I wanted to change that. I feel that I didn't accomplish this since I haven't finished.
